DAYS FILLED WITH YUMMY TREATS

The Year's End are filled with treats of my cultural heritage
lots of chocolates, marzipan, but the following  two are my favorites.

An apple doughnut, with (powdered) sugar on top
and a fruit red wine punch to drink
is our tradition for New Year's Eve and New Year's day.

Red Wine Fruit Drink
I inherited this recipe from my mother(we called it "Bowl")
Cut up any kind of fruit
save the red juice from strawberries or cherries for color
1 cup of red wine
(if you make it  a few hrs. ahead (uncovered-  the alcohol has evaporated,
and is safe for drivers to drink!)
add 7-up or ginger ale to taste (has to be enough, to cover the amount of fruit)
Serve in a small bowl or wine glass

Oliebollen and Apple Doughnuts
These are eaten for New Years Eve and New Years Day in the Netherlands.
They have the same dough and are both deep fried.
An oliebol (pronounciation: oh-lee-boll) is round. Raisins are added to the dough.

.
Used to call them apple fritters, but hubby makes this batter
softer than for a fritter. Since it has a hole in the middle, it became a doughnut:)

Heat about 1 1/2 gallon vegetable oil to deep fry

Batter for the Apple Doughnut or Oliebol
Mix together:
 1 1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup cold Milk
1 egg
dash salt

peel and cut out core (so it forms a hole in the middle)
of 12 Granny Smith apples,
 slice them 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick

Dip a slice of a tart apple in the batter,
(we use Granny Smith)
just enough that it covers the apple
and slide it into hot oil

brown on one side
turn over
put the apple doughnut on paper towel to drain off excess oil.
Delicious when it's still warm and covered with powdered sugar!

deep fry the apple slice covered with batter in hot oil till a deep golden brown.

Hints for the vegetable oil
If it takes too long to brown, the oil is not hot enough.
On a gas oven, it takes between 25-30 medium heat.
If smoke starts rising, the oil is too hot
and will burn the outside of the doughnut
(put the pan off the burner for some minutes)

That your End of the Year celebrations
may be filled with delicious food

your flowers may bloom profusely

*this is the lipstick flower, asked by several*

that your sunsets may be many

 and

have people you love

to welcome 2013!

A Big Thank You to All the Hosts for providing this fun for us !

If you're dieting, look into Suzanne Sommer's way of cutting calories (and her books have recipes with it). She separates the carbs from the proteins (it was the only diet that helped me lose inches and weight). Wishing you everything good for 2013!
