STUDENT LIFE IN HOLLAND

*

In the USA a university campus tends to be more a closed off
 - often with an official entrance, and parking lots,
while in Holland the university is more a part of the city
with city traffic running in between their buildings.
In the past there were only 6 university cities.

Long time ago I did my first year at the VU
(Free University) in Amsterdam
that year propelled me to continue my studies in California
for a more specialized training in psychology
I was surprised they now have  a cancer center.

For Photo Art Friday I inverted the colors of the original pic below

In recent years Holland was the first one in W-Eur. to allow
"international universities"
with a bachelor's degree, recognized by the Dutch.

At present there are now approx.
20 international universities,
one in the Hague where my son studies now.

In the city Groningen (N. of Holl.) where my brother went to the uni.

a student city tends to have even more bikes
congregating in certain areas.

Since this post is about Holland,
am choosing the Dutch word for "bike" for ABC-F
which is "fiets" (pronounce  f- ie as in fear -ts)
plural: fietsen

One of the 1281 bridges of
Amsterdam, the city  built on pillars
(because of the water). The name Amsterdam
means dam of the (river) Amstel

The Rijn is a very important river for Holland,
which bears the last name of the most famous painter
of all times, Rembrandt.
My artistic eye would like a more sensitive rendition
of his sculpted appearance!

Sorry a little blurry,  see the Light blue lettering? Now look at pic below

the place to be on a
Saturday afternoon is on the patio
but not like Starbucks
European students like to be served
individually:)
even though they have to pay more and wait longer.

This is what the building of Three Sisters (light blue lettering)
looks on top. Built in 1730!
Instead of tearing down the old, they blend it with the new.
The pink reflection in the window for Pink Saturday

You can imagine
flowers are important in this country
my friends must have a green thumb
to grow a orchid in a Northern climate
(their house is not kept warm)

Certain skies look so familiar to a landscape or even a culture.

there are universities that are more part of the city, such as Syracuse U in Syracuse, NY and Brown in Providence, RI - much more civilized!

Thank you for the tour of your beautiful home city! The bright colors of the University (now a Cancer Center) would make me feel better I think! I really enjoyed the tour.

Beautiful pictures! I lived in Belgium for a few years (1985/1986) and only made it as far north as Keukenhof. Loved it there!

I loved your post because over here I've been to two "university towns", or cities, if that's what cambridge and Oxford are. They buzz with energy. I loved your photos. Many thanks.

Greetings from London.

Oh my! all those bikes ... How do they find there own bike at the end of the day?

i like the idea of universities being part of the city. the commute would be easier for students. the university i went to was a bit far from the downtown, it was at the outskirts of the city. it's wonderful that students bike to school than drive a car. beautiful photos.

I enjoyed reading your post about Amsterdam and I learned a bit about the city. My daughter visited there in 2005 when she studied in England and brought home beautiful photos of all the flowers... I especially remember the huge tulips! I think I'd agree with the students there and like Three Sisters much better than Starbucks. I like the outdoor seating and I appreciate that quaint old building. We are too quick to tear down buildings in the U.S.

Visiting from PAF - Wow that's a lot of bicycles. Wonder how you'd ever be able to find your bike amongst all those others.

Some lovely shots here. I especially like the one of the Orchids and the Sunset.

Nice pics of my hometown! There are actually two universities in Amsterdam. One is the VU (Vrije Universiteit); the other one is the UvA (University of Amsterdam). Both have there own hospital.

The river Rijn isn't going through Amsterdam, but we have the Amsterdam-Rijn canal (not a river, but made by man) between Amsterdam and Tiel. A river that is going through Amsterdam, besides Amstel, is Het IJ.

Nice to see your pictures! I see you live in LA. I've been there once, but didn't stay long, because we were on a six week road trip. Just stayed a day in Venice Beach.

Thanks for sharing!

I was amazed to see all those bikes! Thinking how hard it can be to find your car, I can't begin to imagine how hard it must be to figure out where you parked your bike at the end of the day. Also, has anyone else noticed that the sunset in the last picture looks like a great eye looking down on the water. Kinda cool. ;)
